Medical Uses for Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a widely used material in the medical field.  There are multiple uses ranging from staples that are used to close incisions in patients, to prosthetics, to surgical tables and equipment.  Stainless steel serves many great purposes throughout the medical industry, mainly because there are many benefits associated with this amazing alloy.

One reason that stainless steel is very common among medical products is due to the fact that it is easy to clean.  Stainless steel is not only resistant to corrosion, but because it has a smooth, slick surface, germs have a difficult time sticking to it; therefore, it is very easy to wipe clean and sterilize.  Also, stainless steel is very durable, so it can withstand high heat temperatures, which is also used as a sterilization technique when rubbing alcohol is not available.

Stainless steel is used in the production of many different types of medical supplies.  Some places where one can find stainless steel is in the surgical tables, instruments such as scalpels, kidney shaped collection dishes, and MRI scanners.  Stainless steel is also used in surgical implants and prostheses.
