Medical Uses for Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a widely used material in the medical field.  There are multiple uses ranging from staples that are used to close incisions in patients, to prosthetics, to surgical tables and equipment.  Stainless steel serves many great purposes throughout the medical industry, mainly because there are many benefits associated with this amazing alloy.

One reason that stainless steel is very common among medical products is due to the fact that it is easy to clean.  Stainless steel is not only resistant to corrosion, but because it has a smooth, slick surface, germs have a difficult time sticking to it; therefore, it is very easy to wipe clean and sterilize.  Also, stainless steel is very durable, so it can withstand high heat temperatures, which is also used as a sterilization technique when rubbing alcohol is not available.

Stainless steel is used in the production of many different types of medical supplies.  Some places where one can find stainless steel is in the surgical tables, instruments such as scalpels, kidney shaped collection dishes, and MRI scanners.  Stainless steel is also used in surgical implants and prostheses.

The dental industry also has many products that contain stainless steel.  Dental chairs, instruments, and even mouth appliances may also be made of stainless steel.

Stainless steel is so durable and hardy that the medical industries use it in storage containers, pipes, and steam sterilizers.  Stainless steel is such a high-grade product that it can hold up to many extreme temperatures and a variety of chemicals.

Stainless steel medical and dental equipment is the most sensible product to use on the market today.  Stainless steel comes in a variety of grades, or qualities; therefore, manufacturers can use a specific grade of stainless steel for specific products.  This flexibility allows the consumer to purchase items that are specific to their own needs.  For example, stainless steel used as an internal staple would be of a different grade than that of a surgical table that is built to hold people of all different weights and sizes.

As you can see, stainless steel is vital to the medical industry.  It provides the doctors, nurses, and hospitals to have the best medical equipment available.  When the medical staff has the best equipment, then they can spend their time focused on what is truly important, and that would be the patient.   Stainless steel is a wonderful invention and we are all so fortunate that it has so many useful purposes in the world of medicine.
